Use: Extensive bibliography on all aspects of chamber music. Performance and research guide.

Coverage: Attempts to be comprehensive (through 1987). As stated in the introduction, this source includes music written for the classical, European instrumental ensemble with 2 - 12 players (no more than one player per part). Excludes music for two or more keyboard instruments without additional non-keyboard instruments and music for percussion alone. Also excludes jazz and ethnic manifestations of chamber music not in the classical European tradition. Limited to sources in German and English.

Organization: Acknowledgments, introduction and abbreviations key followed by bibliography. In chapters: I Basic Reference, II History of Chamber Music, III Analytical studies, IV Performance Practice, V Performers of Chamber Music, and VI Miscellaneous Topics. Each entry includes a complete bibliographic citation and a description, abstract and/or an evaluation of the work cited. Four indices - Subject, Persons, Authors, and Chamber Groups.
