6. This tells you that for this particular article, you will need to see if BYU subscribes to BALLET REVIEW (in this example) in order to find the actual article; this article is not available online or directly from any source.

The best way to find out if the Music and Dance Library actually has BALLET REVIEW or any other journal title, is to go to the Music and Dance Library homepage and use the JOURNALS link.

If you are in the library, just type MUSIC in the address bar and click ENTER, and it will take you directly there.

If you are at home, you can enter this URL: http://music.lib.byu.edu/

When you click on our journals link, use the alphabetical list to find your journal title: Just click where it says “Search Alphabetically”

The alphabetic search will allow you to go to B and find BALLET REVIEW and its call number:

Bach - ML 410 .B1 B15
Bach-Jahrbuch - ML 410 .B1 A6
Balet - MD 1580 .B22
Ballet 2000 - MD 1580 .B242
Ballet Alert! - MD 1580 .B245
Ballet Art - MD 1580 .B247
Ballet Review - MD 1580 .B27

The next two of the recommended databases:

Humanities Full Text (Wilson Web) and

International Index to Performing Arts

contain a substantial amount of FULL TEXT, although they do not ALWAYS have full text.  If full text is not available online, use the method above (ACTIVE MUSIC AND DANCE JOURNALS) to find full text in the actual journals that the MUSIC AND DANCE LIBRARY subscribes to.

B. RILM Abstracts

RILM is a great resource for dance scholarship. It indexes journals, theses, dissertations, even books—with the focus being scholarly research.

  1. Find the Databases A-Z option:

Click on Databases A-Z

  1. Choose R and scroll down to RILM Abstracts of Music Literature and click on that link.  It will take you to a database that looks like this:

D. Dance Division of the New York Public Library :

This is probably the best and most comprehensive resource for dance. Formerly, we subscribed to NYPL’s product called “Dance on Disk,” and this is still available, but is out-dated. The best way to access journal articles indexed by NYPL is to use a resource called WorldCat.

  1. Start at the library home page: http://www.lib.byu.edu/

  1. On the left hand side, go to where it says “More… Select one”

  1. Click on the down arrow, and from the list that comes up, choose “Other Libraries” then click on “GO.”

  1. You will be taken to a webpage that has two columns of other library choices. The one you want is at the bottom of the right hand column, and is called “WORLDCAT.” See example on next page:

  1. Click on the WorldCat (OCLC) link.

  1. Enter your search terms and click the search button:

  1. You have the option to limit your search by format. If you are searching for articles, you can click on the article limiter so that only articles are displayed.

  1. All the articles will have been indexed by NYPL.  They will display like this:
